The fall migration (1999)
in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon
Weather
was exceptionally warm. The number of days above 20° in September was totally
unusual, which doesnÎt mean it increased the number of birding days. A couple
of storms brought in Miquelon winds close to 70 knots. Several interesting species
seen and a few second and third records. Red-throated Loon
: I had a pair with 2 young about 9/10 the size of the adults in a little bog
pond in Northern Langlade August 3. BL had a pair with 2 young adult size in Southern
Langlade the next day, then I saw one adult carrying food in Miquelon Aug. 8.
Last seen 8 birds at sea off the west coast of the isthmus Oct. 22 (RE). Common
Loon : I had 5 birds August 1, off the west coast of Miquelon while
17 were reported off the east coast of the Isthmus August 6 (FV). There were 23
off the W. coast of the Isthmus August 21 (RE/BL), then, in spite of numerous
observations, number reported were low until I had 27 birds near the Cape Miquelon
and 4 off Mirande lake on Nov. 15. There were 19 birds off the west coast of Miquelon
and the Isthmus on Nov. 24. Pied-billed Grebe:
One near the town of St. Pierre, first spotted by LJ, October 25 was present until
November 4 (PA/PB/LJ/BL). One was on a marsh of the Isthmus November 2 (RE).
Red-necked Grebe : Sept. 4 was a record early (1998) that
didnÎt last long ! There was one bird off the west coast of Miquelon Sept. 2 this
year. Only one bird was seen occasionnally up to Nov. 23 while three were present
October 20 and two November 24. (RE). Northern Fulmar :
The prospecting birds at Grand Colombier left early once more. When are they going
to nest ? One only was seen between Langlade and St. Pierre September 14.
Sooty Shearwater : two only, September 14 between St. Pierre
and Langlade (LJ). no Greaters reported at all. Manx Shearwater
: Numerous around Colombier island August 6 (FV). About 40 between
Langlade and St. Pierre September 14 (LJ). Northern Gannet
: 10 reports only of very few birds at a time except for about 10,
fishing off the east coast of Miquelon, August 4 (FV). Last seen, one off St.
Pierre October 19 (RE), 3 days later than average but a month earlier than the
record late (1997). Double-crested Cormorant : Fairly
common throughout the season, I had about 80 birds in flight near the village
of Miquelon September 21. A few, here and there to the end of the period (PA/LJ/RE).
Great Cormorant : I had about 30 birds in Cape Miquelon
November 15. Nobody thought about reporting it from St. Pierre where it is also
resident ! American Bittern : One in St. Pierre
October 19 (BL). One at Langlade during the first week of November, was convincely
described to me by Thérèse Luberry November 9. Great
blue Heron : One in flight in Miquelon November 6 (DD). Great
Egret : One near Grand Barachois September 20 (MD). Yellow-crowned
Night-Heron : One in St. Pierre August 12 (BL). Snow
Goose : One, seen October 9 in flight in Miquelon, is possibly
the same that was shot 4 days later (DD). Canada Goose :
Very low numbers again at Grand Barachois (see other reports for details), there
was a maximum of 34 birds there August 20 (RE), and 31, September 20 (RE/DL).
This is a paradoxical condition as the number of local broods is increasing from
year to year ! Wood Duck : One in Miquelon November
11 (JPD) and a pair, same general area, November 8 (RE). American
Black duck : The first significant numbers, about 170, appeared
in Grand Barachois Sept. 1 (RE). There were a good 300 by Oct. 10 (RE/LJ/DL).
I had about 440 Oct 13 and 480 October 20. Then there were 537 November
13 (RE/JPD). and 513 Nov. 21. Then around 480 during the rest of the period.
Last year we had a record of 478. These are the highest numbers since I started
compiling notes in 1974. Mallard : On pair with
the blacks at Grand Barachois October 13 (RE), One female was shot near the village
of Miquelon October 22 (JPD) and two birds were in Mirande lake November 12 (DD).

August 21 (RE). Northern Pintail : Common in August,
somewhat less so in September and rather rare in October. There were a maximum
of 67 birds at Grand Barachois August 17 and about 15 birds, same area, October
4 (RE/DL). Last seen, October 20, 3 at Grand Barachois (RE). Green-winged
Teal : A total of 24 reports (m. ob.), shows it was fairly common
this fall. There was a maximum of 35 birds on a marsh of the Isthmus September
1 (RE, Daniel Abraham and Johanne Lamoureux). Last report : two in St. Pierre
November 14 (FPA). Ring-necked Duck : One female
on a pond of St. Pierre, October 3 (BL) was there almost throughout the month.
There were two birds in the same pond October 8 (BL), then one again up to October
21 (BL/FPA) Greater Scaup : Reported at Grand Barachois
between October 4 and November 13 in very low numbers, maximum 3 ! (RE/DL/LJ).
There were four near the village of Miquelon November 10 (RE) and 9 or 10 in Mirande
lake 2 days later (DD). Up to three birds were seen in or near the town of St.
Pierre, often with domestic ducks, between October 30 and the end of the period
(BL/PA/PB). Lesser Scaup : Two birds were shot
in Mirande lake October 27 (DD). Common Eider :
9 birds were off the Isthmus October 4 (BL/LJ). the first significant migrants
numbers were 54 off St. Pierre October 13 (BL), about 230, October 25 (LJ). More
common in November where BL had about 1100 just south of St. Pierre on the 13.
Off Miquelon there were about 500 November 23 (LJ/BL). Harlequin
Duck : 2 individuals, November 6, with an obvious small bill, near
the cliffs of Miquelon were probably this species (no telescope at hand) although
only the white patch behind the eye was clearly visible (RE). BL had two birds
in St. Pierre on November 13 Surf Scoter : 23 reports
(between October 4 and Nov. 22) for this species indicates that the species was
more common than usual around the island this fall. There was about 40 birds near
the village of Miquelon October 24 (RE) and about the same number off the Isthmus
the next day (BL). Close to 100 birds off the Isthmus November 2 (RE) is probably
unprecedented, at least in recent years. White-winged Scoter
: 9 reports only (compare with the above !) for a maximum of about
400 birds off the east coast of the Isthmus (the usual haunt for the species)
November 22 (LJ). Black Scoter : 19 reports between October
4 and November 22 for a maximum of 180 off the Isthmus, and about 100 in St. Pierre
October 25 (BL/LJ). Oldsquaw : The first ones (3)
shot off the east coast of Miquelon October 17 (JPD) were two days later than
average. Significant numbers, about 200, were seen off the Isthmus October 28
(BL). Large numbers as follow, mostly off the Isthmus and/or east coast of Miquelon
: about 500, Nov. 2 (RE). A total of almost 700 was tallied by LJ around Miquelon

(RE/BL/DL). Osprey : 9 reports between September
19 and October 13, all in St. Pierre except for 2 sightings in Cape Miquelon (RE/DL/PA/PH/MD/BL/LJ).
Average departing date is October 3. Bald Eagle :
About as usual. Although stated in the previous report that there was no nesting
evidence in St. Pierre, one nest was present as discovered later. One young, presumably
from this nest was found seemingly exhausted in St. Pierre and rescued; It had
a « crossbill » fed for several week, it was sent to Montreal where
it is in quarantine, will know if its bill could be « repaired » soon.
Northern Harrier : Male, female and immatures were
seen in Miquelon between September 13 and October 23 (m. ob.), there is a total
19 reports for the period. Average departing date is October 16. Sharp-shinned

Coot : One bird was seen in St. Pierre in November but I couldnÎt
get the exact date on time. Black-bellied Plover :
The first migrants arrived in July. Common as usual (m. ob.) . I had about 120
birds at Grand Barachois and about 30 near the village of Miquelon on August 17.
Last seen 3 at Grand Barachois November 13 (RE). Average departing date is Nov.
5. American Golden Plover : First migrants as above.

There were about 50 birds or more near the village of Miquelon August 30 (RE).
Last seen : 2 in St. Pierre September 26 (PA). Least Sandpiper
: 5 reports only between August 8 and September 1, few birds a time (PA/RE).
White-Rumped Sandpiper : As usual, the most common
« peep ». The first significant number, probably over 200 were at
Grand Barachois August 4 (RE). I had several hundreds, same site, August 22, 27
and Sept. 1. The Grand Barachois is about 950 hectares in size and sand banks
extend to the middle at low tide; it is not always easy to count shorebirds there,
even less easy to tell species apart ! I tried rough counts of shorebirds this
fall and found about 1200 to 1300 on August 17 and about the same number on August
31. Somewhat less in September : about 700 on Sept. 14 and about 500 on October

13 other reports most of them for the Isthmus, up to September 17 where about
20 were present (RE/LJ), this is 11 days later than average. There was an unusual
maximum of about 50 birds at the lagoon Sept. 1 (RE). Common Snipe
: Present here and there throughout the season as usual. ItÎs never
easy to give number for a species rarely seen in flocks. DD had « a lot
of birds » near the village of Miquelon on October 2, probably migrating
birds just arriving. Red-Necked Phalarope : Two,
October 21 (BL) and 4 the next day (BL) all in St. Pierre. Black-headed

November 2 on the S.W. end of the Isthmus was of the nominate race and not the
usual Kumlieni. They were probably present as usual in St. Pierre harbour but,
unfortunately nobody reported them ! They were numerous there on November 18 (RE).
Black-legged Kittiwake : Only 2 or 3 juveniles were
present on the cliffs of Cape Miquelon by August 23, about 30 adults were not
too far, at sea (RE). A few as usual around the islands throughout the season.

Desbrosse on June 25, 1993 and the second was convincely described by Denis Detcheverry
on June 30, 1996. Mourning Dove : 37 reports seems
to indicate this was a very good year for the species here, possibly a record
high. Highest numbers seen at feeders were 17 in St. Pierre November 11 (DG) and
15 in Miquelon Nov. 13 (JCH). SA had also 9 birds at her feeder, out of town,
Nov. 22. The first birds (4) appeared in Miquelon Sept. 20 (LJ/RE/DL) and none
seen until October 8, regularly thereafter. Yellow-billed Cuckoo
: We (RE/DL) had one bird in St. Pierre October 2. Short-eared

in St. Pierre. One in the Cape of Miquelon Sept. 20 (RE/DL) is possibly the same
bird reported by LJ in the same general area the same day. Blue
Jay : The species is still quite a curiosity here, everyone talking
about this beautiful bird when it occurs, only from time to time. This fall the
first one was seen at Langlade at MJBÎs feeder October 8 and 10. Then it was reported
for St. Pierre only from October 15 to the end of the period. It seems there was
a maximum of 7 birds involved, going from one feeder to another (DG/FPA/DL/SA/LJ/PA/PB).
