The Colonial Exposition of 1937
This exposition was held in Paris as the clouds of war were gathering. It
was held to celebrate the unity of the French Empire but naturally it dwelt on
France´s richer, larger and more economically viable colonies and their achievements
under French rule.Poor St. Pierre and Miquelon were sadly under represented. However
the islands did participate in the omnibus stamp issue for 21 of the French colonies.
There were six values issued for St. Pierre and Miquelon , but few of them
were actually used on the islands . It is said that there were only 1,000 sets
available for sale at St. Pierre. The cover illustrated was one of the few that
were sent from St. Pierre. This one was destined for Australia and was sent on
August 27 1937, it travelled via Halifax,Nova Scotia and Vancouver B.C. and arrived
in Sydney, Australia on October 23, 1937. Inside the envelope is an acknowledgement
from Mlle. Fumey , the Postmistress at St. Pierre. The stamps themselves depict
Commerce,Sailing Ships,Women of three races, Agriculture, an Allegorical design
" France extends the torch of civilisation" and for some reason Diane de Poitiers
! A miniature sheet was also issued at the same time with the theme " Art and
Technical achievements " The Palais de Chaillot was created for this Exposition.
