By David Allen, dallen@axionet.com In
the 1950s before the regular advent of scheduled air passenger services, liaison
with the islands was by boat. The boat M/V Miquelon operated a regular
service between St. Pierre and North Sydney, Nova Scotia , carrying passengers
and all manner of freight between the islands and the mainland. Mail was naturally
a priority ,being fed into the Canadian system at North Sydney . Shown here is
a particularly clean Paquebot cover of the 1950s , clearly cancelled as
being received at North Sydney on February 05 1954. It is also endorsed with the
markings of the M/V Miquelon. Addressed to a U.S.A. destination the postage
placed on the letter was Frs.17.20 being the correct first step surface rate to
the U.S.A. The sender of the letter was a Mme. Henriette Fitzpatrick whose address
was a postal box at St. Pierre. The back of the letter is also endorsed with the
ship´s marking. Philatelic
